HVAC tips for Cold Weather in Winter 2024

Home > HVAC tips for Cold Weather

Make sure your home's heating system is ready to keep you warm and toasty this winter season. Contact Westin Air Heating and Cooling for furnace repair, maintenance, and installation services. Westin Air is the best company for all your heating needs.

Here are a few points to consider:

Furnace winter maintenance

Consider getting a furnace tune-up or winter maintenance service, if you haven't already done so. Many problems can be found early, which would avoid costly repairs later!

Check your filters

Clean filters are extremely important in both heating and cooling seasons. Dirty filters prevent good airflow and cause many problems with both heating and cooling systems.

Turn on humidifier

Turn on your whole home humidifier, if you have one. We often find that people don't remember to turn humidifiers on, or know how to change the dampers between the summer/winter options. Also, check the water panel for mineral build up and replace if necessary. A home with proper humidity will feel warmer in the winter. If you would like to add a humidifier to your heating system, just give Westin Air a call at 614-794-1259.

Check for air leaks

Check for air leaks around windows and doors. These are easily sealed with products you can get at your local home improvement store, and will greatly increase the comfort in your home.

Check return air vents

Make sure your supply and return air vents are not blocked by furniture. Good return is essential to keeping each room in your home comfortable.

Check attic insulation

Check your insulation in your attic! If you feel it is lacking, adding insulation will certainly lower your utility bills. Also, check for tax credits that may apply.

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Check out your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to be sure they are operating correctly.

Check your thermostat

For homes with gas heat, consider setting your thermostat lower when you are away from home and at night. For all electric systems, this is counterproductive, as turning up the thermostat a great deal may trigger the emergency heat strips to turn on, which will increase your electric bill.
