First check to see if the circuit breaker is tripped. Go to your breaker panel and look for the circuit marked "furnace." If the breaker is tripped, try switching it off and then on again. If it trips again, be sure to give us a call to check out your furnace to see what the issue is that is causing the breaker to trip.
Sometimes the problem with your furnace not functioning is really a problem with the thermostat. Make sure the display is on, there are no error messages, the system is set to heat, and that no programming is interfering with your heating. Sometimes another family member has tried to adjust the thermostat, and actually did something that turned the heat off. If everything looks OK and is set to the desired temperature, then the problem is probably not the thermostat.
If your furnace runs, but it is struggling to heat your home, be sure to check out your air filter. If the air filter is very dirty, it will prevent the air flow needed for the proper operation of your furnace. Sometimes the furnace will run for a short period of time and then shut down because it is overheating, due to lack of airflow. Filter changes are a very important part of maintaining your furnace. It is a very easy thing to forget, but is really easy to fix. Always keep a few extra filters on hand, and mark your calendar as a reminder to change the filters regularly.
Furnaces now have electronic ignitors to start the combustion process, which is necessary to produce heat. Gone are the days of the pilot light that is always burning. If your ignitor has gone bad, there is no way to have combustion. Your furnace may turn on, and may just blow cold air. If you suspect a faulty ignitor, call Westin Air. One of our service techs will be able to quickly confirm if that is the problem, and install a new one on the spot!
When your furnace starts up, you may hear a motor sound, which is the draft inducer motor. The purpose of this motor is to start the airflow moving through the combustion chamber and then out through the furnace venting pipes. This action promotes combustion and gets rid of the exhaust which contains harmful carbon monoxide. For safety reasons, your furnace will not turn on, if the draft inducer motor is not functioning. Our service technicians can diagnose a bad inducer motor, and install a new one quickly to get your furnace functioning again.
A bad capacitor can be easily replaced and is an integral part of your furnace operation. This small part looks like a little metal can, and cannot be repaired, but fortunately, it is not a very expensive component to replace. The purpose of the capacitor is to store extra power that is needed to get the blower motor turning, when your furnace starts up. If you hear a clicking noise when the furnace is trying to start, and yet the blower motor doesn't start up, the culprit is usually a bad capacitor. Sometimes you might hear a humming sound in your furnace. This could be the blower motor trying to turn on, but it seems like it just can't. This can also be a sign of a bad capacitor. Our highly trained service technicians can quickly diagnose a bad capacitor and replace it on the spot, getting your furnace back up and running quickly. We are ready to serve you 24/7, so if you suspect a bad capacitor, give us a call at 614-794-1259.
Sometimes furnace vent pipes get clogged with snow or ice, or even a bird's nest! When the vent pipe is clogged there is no vacuum created to remove the harmful gasses that are products of combustion. The furnace pressure switch senses this and shuts down the furnace for your safety. If your furnace venting is easy to access, have a look to be sure that it is clear of all debris.
The problems mentioned above are certainly not all the problems that a furnace might have that would prevent it from operating correctly, but they are some of the most common ones. Other things that might indicate you have a problem with your furnace are:
