Home > HVAC Maintenance Checklist for Spring Season
Spring is finally here, and that means that hot weather will be here before you know it. To make sure that your air conditioner is ready to keep you cool and comfortable, here are a few tips to remember:
Consider getting an AC tune-up or spring maintenance service to avoid an untimely breakdown when the hot summer weather is here. Westin Air's highly trained technicians can spot many problems early on, and let you know what needs to be done to avoid major problems and costly breakdowns later.
A clean filter is just as important in cooling seasons, as it is in winter. A dirty filter can reduce airflow resulting in the AC coil freezing up and reducing the cooling capability of your system, which in turn, results in higher electric bills. Always keep your filters clean!
If you have a whole home humidifier, you will want to turn it off as soon as you can see that you won't be needing much heat anymore. Turn the humidistat to the "OFF" position and turn the lever on the damper (located close to the unit on the metal duct) to the "Summer" position. find that people don't remember to turn humidifiers on, or know how to change the dampers between the summer/winter options.
During the summer, many people complain of their second floor being warmer than the first. This is a common problem and can be helped by making sure your return air vents are not blocked by furniture. Good return is essential for good airflow. Also, it is helpful to keep your blower running constantly, or at least, in the circulate mode. Hot air rises, so you want to be sure to keep it circulating, Also, make sure your supply and return air vents are not blocked by furniture. Another consideration is the insulation in your attic. Make sure it is adequate, and if not, it is not that costly to add additional insulation. Also, there are tax credits that make it even more affordable.
It is important that your outdoor air conditioning unit is clear from dirt build up, leaves, or old grass clippings that may have accumulated around the exterior. Also, if your unit has shrubs or ornamental grasses nearby, make sure to keep a minimum clearance 2 feet between the planting and the unit. Most units pull in air from the sides and discharge from the top. To keep your unit running properly, it needs the ability to freely pull in the outside air. Also, while inspecting the unit, be sure to inspect the larger line set portion that has the insulation on it. Over time, the outside elements will deteriorate the insulation and it will start to fall off. When the larger line set is exposed to the outdoor air, it greatly reduces the efficiency. Replacing the insulation is an inexpensive and quick way to help keep your unit running efficiently.
